Using an ATM is usually a safe and easy process. The bank uses a variety of security protocols such as video monitoring to improve ATM safety. Please be aware of your surroundings when you approach an ATM to withdraw cash. You will find more tips to help make sure your ATM transaction is as safe as possible:
Be cautious at ATMs
Avoid facilities in dark or remote places. If you see people lurking around the ATM or see anything else that makes you uncomfortable, find another ATM and report the situation to the police. Whenever possible, take another person with you.
Keep your doors locked, all passenger windows closed, and your engine running at drive up facilities. Park your car in a well-lit location as close to the ATM as possible when using a walk-up facility. Check your surroundings before getting out of the car. Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition. Lock up and take your keys with you.
Remove your cash, receipt, and card after every transaction. If you make a withdrawal, pocket the cash immediately. Be discrete and don’t expose or count your money until you are in a safe place.
Be efficient
Have your card ready when you approach the ATM. Block the view of others by standing between the terminal and any person who is waiting, or cup your hand over the keypad as you enter your personal identification number (PIN).
Prevent debit card fraud
Memorize your PIN. Don’t tell anyone your PIN or account number and never loan anyone your card. Never write your PIN on your card or anything you carry with or near your card.
Report lost or stolen cards immediately. You can be liable for activity on your card if you do not report it as lost or stolen.
Never give your PIN over the phone. Be especially cautious about information you discuss when using cellular phones. Know whom you are talking to. Never give unsolicited callers personal information and account numbers over the phone. Police officers, law enforcement officials, and financial institution representatives should never ask you to withdraw funds from an ATM. No one has the right to ask or compel you to withdraw funds from an ATM.
Only swipe your card in the ATMs built-in card reader. Criminals can place devices on ATMs to capture card and PIN information enabling criminals to create a counterfeit card to access your account.
Take care of your card
Treat your card as if it were cash. Protect your card by not exposing the magnetic stripe to other magnetic objects that can erase your card.
Record and file the name of your card issuer and the necessary phone numbers for reporting its loss or theft.
